Day 2 June 15, 2008

Happy Father's Day

We all forgot about it being Father's Day until they announced it on the radio. Bill's gift is this trip and going on the 2 train rides.

We left the little hovel, aka Winslow, AZ, and headed east on the 40 towards New Mexico. We didn't make a left at Albuquerque like Bugs Bunny. We took a left at Gallup and headed up a road similar Hwy. 395, lots of little ticket generating towns and bad road.

After seeing the rock at Shiprock, we turned left to Teh-Nos-Pos. We thought we might be on the wrong road because there was seriously nothing there. We made it to Four Corners, which now has an entrance fee! I think it was worth the 50 mile detour to get the pics!

We then headed to Cortez and Mesa Verde. I forgot about the drive into Mesa Verde. When my family went 20 years ago, I must have been sleeping in the motor home. The only way to see the incredible ruins is to drive 20 miles into the park. Motor homes try to share the road too...bummer. What an amazing drive. We must have gone up a few thousand feet and passed through some of the greenest areas hence the "verde" part of the name. Then there were signs of drought too.

The walk to the ruins was a lot longer and steeper than I remember! The kids had fun looking around. We even got to go down inside a room that was quite chilly even though it was warm out.

We made it to Durango and with a huge sigh of relief realized that we are in a great hotel surrounded by great restaurants!

Tomorrow is the big train ride. With the time change, I better get to bed!

about 350 miles today. Songs: Rocky Mountain High and Life is a Highway
